The young athlete’s recent success in the African Championships, where she won gold and received honour from government was last Saturday celebrated at the Prince of Wales Ground. With flyers bearing her pictures all around, every one of the women who attended, young and old, easily related to her face. “She has set just the perfect and timeous example for every woman in Eswatini and throughout the whole of Africa. We’re here celebrating being women and also celebrating her. We’re so proud of her,” said Swaziland National Sport and Recreation Council’s (SNSRC) Board member Buyile Shongwe. Shongwe was one of those in attendance in the inaugural National Women Sports Day, sponsored by government through the SNSRC. Shongwe echoed Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (SOCGA) Board member and Swaziland Boxing Association (SWABA) President Pearl Dlamini’s words that it was time women came out in full force and show confidence that they can change the world. Dlamini had also said the recognition given to women through the sports day was massive and one they will always look forward to. “It’s just in line with the King’s call for women to be recognised and be given high positions. The whole world has realised women power is very effective and moving towards empowering them. The king wants to see the same happen in Eswatini and this is a good start,” she said.
