MBABANE – They were 32- now they are two. Manzini Wanderers and Young
Buffaloes will contest the 2018 edition of the magical SwaziBank Cup, dubbed
Uyayifuna Na! on April 29 following last weekend’s semi-final matches, played
across two stadiums, King Sobhuza II Memorial and Somhlolo National Stadium.
Wanderers brushed aside Mbabane Highlanders, while Young Buffaloes needed the
dreaded penalty shootouts to see-off Green Mamba. Below we bring you the things
you might have missed or learnt over the two days in Nhlangano and Lobamba…
Wanderers search for first SwaziBank trophy alive
Manzini Wanderers are in the third SwaziBank Cup final in the tournament’s
15-year chequered history. The green flies on the wall say the crowd pullers are
yet to lay their hands on the glittering trophy after losing to Mbabane
Highlanders in 2009 and Moneni Pirates in 2015. Following Sunday’s 2-0 win
over Highlanders, courtesy of goals from Mike Dombo and Aladeon Kola,
Wanderers’ search for their first SwaziBank gold remains alive.
Oladele’s moment of madness
When will players learn? Christiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid in Spain took off his
shirt after converting a stoppage time penalty against Italy’s Juventus last
week in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Spare a thought, it was
deep in injury time and the Portuguese knew he could take the yellow as it did
not prevent him in the next match, but Green Mamba’s Solomon Oladele decided
to strip after putting his side ahead four minutes after the hour mark. In such
a crunch game, another booking warranted a red and it happened in the most
crucial moments of the match, with about 15 minutes remaining from regulation
time. It is now history that Buffaloes equalised to send the game to extra time
and so it is that Green Mamba are out of the tournament.
