The team is due to feature in two major upcoming races; the Resolution Run which is billed for next week Saturday and the Wafa Wafa Marathon which is slated for early next month. There were over 30 members of the Lobamba-based athletics club in the five-kilometre weekly race that started and finished at Mbabane Club yesterday. Some of the well-known runners were Sifiso Vilakati, Siyabonga Sihlongonyane and Gugu Mthembu, to mention a few. They did not run just to add numbers but some of their athletes excelled during the 37th edition of the parkrun. Swazi Slojos’ Siyabonga Sihlongonyane gave 18 times parkrun winner Nkululeko Gama of Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) a hard time as he came second, just 12 seconds later than the latter. Gama clocked in at 15:30 minutes while Sihlongonyane finished the race in 15:42 minutes. Meanwhile, in the ladies category, another Swazi Slojos runner, Gugu Mthembu, reigned supreme as she finished tops in 23:47 minutes while club-less Stephanie Dowling came second on 24:57 minutes. The ladies category winner, Mthembu, said the parkrun helped them to improve their speed and endurance which comes to play during long-distance races. “I am very happy to have won this race today. This shows an improvement as I managed to beat my personal best time of 25 minutes previously to 23:47 minutes. On behalf of the team, we have decided to join the Mbabane Parkrun in preparations for the upcoming races namely; the Resolution Run and Wafa Wafa Marathon,” Mthembu said.
