MBABANE – After a tension-filled quarter-final draw at Sincephetelo Motor
Vehicle Accident Fund (SMVAF) head offices yesterday, you would not be faulted
for thinking it was the repeat of the 1980 South African comedy, ‘The Gods
must be crazy’, all over again.
Writer and director of the South African Comedy, Jamie Uys might not have been
in attendance among the good crowd of close to 30 people who turned up, but he
would have probably written the same script at the end of the quarter-final draw
for the 2018 Ingwenyama Cup.
It was a perfect stage, draw, tournament, teams and venue. It had all the
hallmarks of a captivating knockout tournament which continues to push the
boundaries and re-live the romantic biblical story line of a little David
landing a precious blow on the lardy Goliaths of local football. The Ingwenyama
on its third edition has seen it all and more.
At yesterday’s draw event, from the moment the programme director and
Ingwenyama Cup Public Relations Officer (PRO) Nkosilenhle Masuku explained the
draw procedure, palpable tension and anxiety seemed to envelope the well
furniture boardroom and the New Year pleasantries were temporarily halted. The
tension became so thick it could have been cut even with a blunt knife.
The tournament’s surprise package or giant-killers, if you may call them,
Milling Hot Spurs director, Ivan Munroe was first to step up and as the football
gods would have it, he picked the other remaining National First Division side,
Mbabane Citizens.
