MBABANE – The National Referees Association has pulled an ‘Italian job’
with a whopping E330 000 worth of communication system kit from the Italian
Embassy.
The official presentation of the sponsorship was done yesterday at the office of
the Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs David ‘Cruiser’
Ngcamphalala by Italian Consul Marzio D’orsi, who was accompanied by his son
Lorenzo D’orsi. National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) CEO
Frederick Mngomezulu and PS Prince Mlayeto also graced the event.
The seven set communication system gadgets will help match officials stay in
contact with each other during games. And according to Consul D’orsi, the
gadgets were bought in Canada following a promise they made with Minister
Ngcamphalala and the National Referees Association executive committee chaired
by Sipho Kunene.
D’orsi said the sponsorship would go a long way in improving communication
between referees during the match.
“A number of controversial decisions have emanated from lack of communication
among referees, but we hope the seven set kit will remedy the situation,” he
said.
He said what was left now was to help provide the country’s football technical
assistance, by bringing experts from Italy either on refereeing or coaching to
share their knowledge of the game.
Minister Ngcamphalala was also ecstatic about the kind gesture from the Italian
Embassy.
“There have been concerns about certain decisions made during games. But with
these gadgets, we hope that at least four people will be on guard to ensure that
decisions taken are devoid of controversies,” he said.
Referees Association Chairman Sipho Kunene thanked the Italian Embassy for
coming to his organisation’s rescue.
