This was revealed during a tour yesterday by the Prime Minister’s (PM) Office Portfolio Committee. Also present was the National Commissioner of Police (NATCOM) William Tsintsibala Dlamini. Victor Nxumalo, the Principal Secretary (PS) in the PM’s office, was also present. The police station has been under construction since 2017 and E138 492 992.13 had been budgeted for it. So far, about E62.5 million has been spent for the first phase. Initially, the building should have been constructed within 24 months and completed in August 2019 but this is no longer the case. When the project started, a construction company, which had been awarded the tender to construct the police station, was paid about E20.6 million. The company was, however, liquidated and another took over. Mpendulo Mvubu, who is one of the representatives of the project, mentioned that the company was liquidated. Mvubu said the total amount needed for the continuation of the project was at least E78 million. He revealed that the next phase of construction was the most expensive. Mvubu said the E78 million would ensure the completion of the structure. The NATCOM said he was so far impressed with the construction of the police station, adding that it was a state-of-the-art building. standard Dlamini said the new building had set a higher standard for future police stations. Asked about what would happen to the surrounding police stations such as the one in Pigg’s Peak, Dlamini said they would continue operating as normal. On another note, while the delegation was leaving, their vehicle developed mechanical problems. Police officers had to push the Toyota Quantum to kick-start it. They initially pushed towards the front but it failed to start and they tried the second time in reverse until it did.
