MBABANE – He works in a department that deals with money on a daily basis and
it seems like he has developed a style of winning it in competitions as well.
Thembinkosi Dube, an accountant at the Master of the High Court, left the TV
Licence Collection office smiling yesterday after receiving his prize for having
been drawn as the main winner during the recent draw of the TV Licence Pay & Win
Competition. Interestingly, it was not the first time that the shy-looking
31-year-old man won in the competition, as it was the case when it was hosted
early this year where he took home a consolation prize of E500. Dube not only
received over E1 000 in cash but was also spoiled with a night for two outing,
which comes with breakfast and dinner at the Pigg’s Peak Casino. Also part of
Dube’s package is MTN Mobile Money worth E500, an MTN fixed phone bundled with
unlimited data and 1 000 minutes and cash to spend.
Interviewed after receiving his prize, Dube said he was going to spend it on
buying a special gift for his wife as she was the one who encouraged him to pay
his TV licence and take part in the competition. Taking the second prize was
Celucolo Maseko, who received a night for two voucher at Pigg’s Peak Casino,
which comes with breakfast and dinner. Maseko also received an MTN fixed phone
bundled with unlimited data and 1 000 minutes plus cash. Wonderboy Mavuso was
the lucky one to win the third prize where he received a shopping voucher worth
E500, sponsored by Boxer Superstores and a set-top box from the Ministry of ICT.
Also included in his prize was some cash for him to spend. Before the
presentation was done, it was explained that all the prizes won were taxable
according to the Lottery Act of 1963 as amended, and its subsidiary legislation.
Addressing the winners, TV Licence Collection Project Manager Modicai Donga,
congratulated them and encouraged all emaSwati who own television sets to pay
their licences in order to enhance the industry. Donga said their statistics
showed that there were about 178 000 gadgets which were transmitting signals in
the country, and said payment of the licences would go a long way in enhancing
the local television industry. Representing Swazi MTN was Mbali, who said the
mobile company was encouraging all television owners to use the Mobile Money
service to pay for their licences. For those who have tried but have not been
lucky in the competition, there is still hope as four more draws are yet to be
conducted. Besides Swazi MTN, other sponsors of the competition include the
Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), Buy ‘n’ Save
Spar, Boxer, Times of Swaziland and Pigg’s Peak Casino.
