Times Of Swaziland: FOOD SHORTAGE: PUPILS COLLAPSE AT KAKHOLWANE FOOD SHORTAGE: PUPILS COLLAPSE AT KAKHOLWANE ================================================================================ .BY SITHEMBILE HLATSHWAYO on 07/06/2018 03:17:00 MBABANE – The dreadful hunger situation faced by pupils of KaKholwane Primary School has resulted in some of them collapsing and missing classes. This was disclosed by the school’s Head teacher Smangele Mtsefwa, who said within a week, about eight pupils collapsed due to hunger, as a result of lack of food at the school. Yesterday morning, she said a Grade II pupil soiled herself after she experienced severe stomach cramps due to hunger, while others bled through their nostrils. This, she said, was the most traumatic experience for the teachers who were also helpless. Mtsefwa said the teachers had challenges continuing with classes as they had to take care of the affected pupils. In most cases, she said pupils complained of hunger, adding that they had gone without a meal for two days. “This is an everyday situation that we have to deal with as a school. The pupils clearly cannot concentrate in class under the current conditions,” she said. Mtsefwa said those in lower grades were more prone to falling ill, while pupils in the senior classes slept on their desks. Kitchen She said the school kitchen had been locked since the beginning of the term and they were not preparing any meals for the pupils. Mtsefwa said the situation was appalling and this would affect the pupils’ academic performance. According to Mtsefwa, last term they received 14 bags of maize meal, seven bags of beans, cooking oil and a bucket of peanut butter, which had all been used up.
