PIGG’S PEAK – Could some police officers be giving dagga growers tough
competition in growing the illicit herb?
Some dagga growers have expressed concern that certain police officers were also
engaged in the growing of the illegal drug.
These concerns were raised by the Deputy Police Information and Communications
Officer, Assistant Superintendent Phindile Vilakati yesterday.
She was speaking during a press briefing in which the police revealed that dagga
valued at E2 411 185.20 would be destroyed.
Vilakati wanted to know if it was true that the police were only destroying
dagga because they were also in competition with criminals who were growing it.
Narcotics
Vilakati posed this question to Inspector Samuel Mamba, who was representing the
head of the Royal Swaziland Police Drug and Narcotics Unit.
Mamba, however, said police officers were not currently aware of any of their
colleagues who were engaged in dagga growing. He said the police would not
hesitate to arrest anyone dealing in dagga, regardless of whether they were law
enforcers or not.
Mamba also warned that dagga trade was a serious concern because it also
affected children.
He urged parents to monitor their children because they were being influenced by
dagga.
He also commended the National Commissioner of Police Isaac Magagula for
ensuring that police had the chemicals as well as transport to reach the areas
that were dagga infested, to destroy it.
The dagga which was destroyed yesterday weighed 4 018.642 kilogrammes while
about 5 571.551 was destroyed in October 2017.
