Times Of Swaziland: ‘REVERSE DECISION TO CLOSE SPINTEX’ ‘REVERSE DECISION TO CLOSE SPINTEX’ ================================================================================ BY SIBUSISO ZWANE on 08/12/2017 01:14:00 MANZINI – “Reverse the decision allowing Spintex to close shop.” This is what angry labour unions are demanding from government and the company management. The Amalgamated Trade Union of Swaziland (ATUSWA) and the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA) want the closure of the factory to be reversed until workers are fully consulted. The unions said they were not happy with the manner in which the issue of Spintex Swaziland was handled, and they were calling upon the company to follow the laid down procedure of consulting with workers before notifying government of the closure, instead of doing it vice versa. Wonder Mkhonza, the Secretary General of ATUSWA, said government, as a custodian of the law, should not advise the company on what to do but spell the laid down procedures to be followed if the factory wants to close down. On the same note, Mkhonza said they were worried that government no longer wanted to be involved in the matter, yet it had been part of it since the company raised the issue of financial instability it was going through. “Government cannot jump ship now. We are all in this together,” he said. Mkhonza said government should entertain the matter after being furnished with an agreement between the employer and workers. He said in the case where the parties failed to reach an agreement, government should first be satisfied that the employees were consulted before entertaining the issue.
