4 DIE FROM MALARIA

PIGG’S PEAK – In just over a week, four people have died as a result of
malaria.
Most of the deaths are said to have been recorded at the Pigg’s Peak
Government Hospital, while others were reported in other areas. Malaria is
transmitted by the female anopheles mosquito, which feeds on blood then
transmits the deadly virus through vomit into its victim.
The disease is one of the deadliest killers but the good news is that it is
preventable and treatable.
According to information gathered at the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital, from
some of the medical staff as well as relatives who were watching over patients,
affected areas appear to be Ndzingeni, Mzimnene, Ntfonjeni and Timphisini. It
has been gathered that between 20 to 30 people were diagnosed with the deadly
disease at the hospital.
This outbreak has shocked many people around Pigg’s Peak, most of whom said
they were of the view that mosquitoes were not found in such areas. Some of the
diagnosed patients were already discharged but more were still undergoing
treatment at the hospital. The outbreak is said to have been discovered in the
past seven days when several people reported flu- like symptoms.
For some, it was too late.
Several people were found outside the hospital waiting to see their relatives
who had been admitted.
However, some of the relatives expressed fear over the outbreak of malaria,
which they said had left them puzzled because it was not common in northern
Hhohho.
