Times Of Swaziland: MPS GIVE MINISTER 5 DAYS TO EXPLAIN SCU CLOSURE MPS GIVE MINISTER 5 DAYS TO EXPLAIN SCU CLOSURE ================================================================================ BY NTOMBI MHLONGO on 14/09/2017 01:56:00 LOBAMBA – Members of Parliament have given the Minister of Education and Training, Phineas Magagula, five days to submit a report stating the fate of the trouble-riddled Swaziland Christian University (SCU). This took place yesterday at the House of Assembly after Mbabane West MP Johane Shongwe, moved a motion that Magagula should explain before the House the reasons for the sudden closure of the institution addressing, inter alia, the issues including the genesis of the resolution to suspend operations and the corrective actions to be taken to address the inconvenience experienced by the students and parents alike. Another issue was the proposed programme for reimbursement of the affected parties, particularly the students in the event that the institution did not resume operations within a reasonable period. After motivating his motion, other MPs stood up in numbers to support MP Shongwe by debating the motion. They demanded to know why the institution was allowed to even start operating without checking if it met all the requirements. As if he knew that it was going to be his bad day at the office, before the motion was moved, the minister presented a ministerial statement where he gave what he termed an update to the House regarding the suspension of the institution. However, his presentation angered the MPs as they felt that he had done so because he wanted to block the motion. After Shongwe had motivated his motion, the MPs roasted the minister and accused him of having presented a shoddy update, which they argued did not give a clear picture of what actually transpired leading to the suspension of the operations at the institution.
