2 SWAZI TRUCK DRIVERS SUFFER PERMANENT DISABILITIES

MANZINI – It has emerged that two Swazi truck drivers, who had been employed
by Gregory Govender, were involved in horrific accidents and suffered permanent
disabilities after the Sanele May incident.
The news was shared on the Sanele May Support Group.
The two Swazi drivers currently reside in Nhlangano and Mankayane and are no
longer employed.
“It was revealed that the owner of the truck, Govender which Sanele was
involved in has had two of his other trucks being involved in an accident
between 2014 and 2015 besides the Sanele accident. In both incidents, the
drivers were from Swaziland just like Sanele was and they were severely injured.
One had his arm amputed at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg (sic),” it was
disclosed on the page.
The trucking company that May and the other two Swazis worked in has since
changed its name to Mount Moria. Some of those who commented in the group said
there was a need for the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) to conduct thorough
investigations regarding truck incidents in that country to determine their root
cause.
The two truck drivers are back in the country as they were seriously injured and
suffered permanent disabilities.
They had been hospitalised in SA health facilities for some time before
returning to the kingdom.
“One of the drivers was hospitalised for three months. It should be clarified
that these two accidents took place after the Sanele May accident,” the
commenter said.
During the Sanele trial, Govender, under the plea and sentence agreement, paid a
combined fine of E25 000.
Meanwhile, May is serving a 10-year jail term at the Umzinto Correctional
Services facility for his role as the driver in the incident.
In September 2013, the truck hurtled down Fields Hill after its brakes failed to
apply.
May took the first off-ramp towards Richmond Road, Pinetown. The truck went
through the intersection - smashing into two cars and four minibus taxis in an
incident that killed 22 people immediately. Another two people later died in
hospital.
