MBABANE – The message was loud and clear that government should put in place
policies to protect people living with albinism; who are always on the run, as
they are hunted down like animals.
This was the message as people living with albinism yesterday took to the
streets in Mbabane, calling for the stop in the ruthless and senseless ritual
killings of people living with albinism.
The march started at 9.30am from Baphalali Red Cross Soc
iety to the Mbabane Bus Rank and the Deputy Prime Minister’s (DPM) Office.
The campaign, dubbed ON THE RUN #PRICE TAG, is about sensitising the nation
against the fallacy that body parts of people living albinism in certain rituals
in witchcraft related purposes can make one rich or bring luck.
The whole campaign was triggered by the cases of senseless killings of people
living with albinism even in other Africa countries such that, for example, the
Malawian government, through its president, has even come on board to put a stop
to this barbarism.
Tanzania has seen some of the worst killings of people living with albinism, for
ritual purposes and Swaziland has seen similar cases of brutal killings of
people just because of their skin pigmentation. “And here at home, in
Swaziland people have been silent,” ON THE RUN #PRICE TAG Campaign Manager
Oliver Museka said.
He said the essence of the campaign was to say Swaziland should stand up and put
a stop to the ritual killings of fellow brothers and sisters, something that is
downright barbaric.
