The 17th edition of the SwaziTelecom Charity Cup is already on the cards, and
for the football passionate nation they are obviously waiting with bated breath
for the kick-off of this important tournament in the kingdom.
The tournament, which has glaringly proven to be the centre of attraction for
every inhabitant of this country, will see the involvement of the big three
teams, in capital city giants Mbabane Swallows and Highlanders as well as hub
giants Manzini Wanderers, which are all guaranteed participation in the
tournament.
A play-off involving four teams will also take centre stage to produce the other
team that will join the big three in the one day tournament.
That is the current situation in as far as the charity cup is concerned, and one
is tempted to deduce that this year’s tournament will be one of the
entertaining editions in many years.
When considering the possibility that either of the big three could draw each
other in the semi-finals or else meeting each other in the final, it goes
without saying that spectators are set to witness a spectacular Charity Cup. The
huge fan base of these teams is also a motivating factor, hence the success of
the event in terms of attendance and support is guaranteed.
Apart from the additional entertainment lined up for the day, for a football
follower worth his or her salt no one would ever want to miss the football
action of the day.
Just imagine a Swallows/Highlanders or Wanderers/Highlanders or
Swallows/Wanderers clash in any of the stages of the tournament.
By any standard these teams are set to give their supporters the glitz
associated with a tournament of this magnitude.
With due respect to the fourth team that will join the trio, it is an undisputed
fact that a larger fraction of the country’s football spectatorship is formed
by the big three teams, and that is not to suggest that their (4th team)
inclusion in the tournament is invaluable.
We will really appreciate the impact by either of the teams which will
participate; hence one cannot cease to urge the teams to give us good football
action on the day.
With this day usually regarded as a family day for most of us, we are looking
forward to a violence-free event that will not only be characterised by sheer
football artistry but by also bringing enjoyment to people from different walks
of life. Let the spirit of ‘Yami Nawe’ be part and parcel of our lives as we
countdown to the main tournament.
