Times Of Swaziland: NHLANGANO COUNCIL CEO NEW ROAD SAFETY CHAIRMAN NHLANGANO COUNCIL CEO NEW ROAD SAFETY CHAIRMAN ================================================================================ BY MELISA MSWELI on 03/05/2019 04:13:00 MBABANE – Nhlangano Town Council Chief Executive Officer Apollo Maphalala is the new Road Safety Council chairman for the year 2019 – 2022. He is part of an 11 member council which was announced by the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Chief Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe, in a press conference at the ministry yesterday. The minister stated that the council was appointed in terms of Section 3 of the Road Safety Council Act of 1983. Among other things, the council was expected to promote road safety in the country with a mission to reduce road traffic crashes, especially fatal and serious ones. The council is also expected to coordinate road safety in the country and enshrine the spirit of ‘shared responsibility’ in road safety issues. “Government alone cannot win the fight against road traffic deaths if we do not all join in the fight,” stated the minister. He said the shared responsibility principle was equally articulated by the Africa Road Safety Charter which was signed by Heads of States of the African Union Commission in 2016. The charter advocates for participation of private sector civil society organisations and non-governmental organisation in road safety matters. The minister mentioned that there was a need for the newly-elected council to have a picture of how the scourge of road traffic crashes was costing the country.
