MBABANE - “Awards can give one a tremendous amount of encouragement to keep
getting better, no matter how young or old one is.”
This statement by Alan Alda has proven to be applicable to Eswatini-born actor
Richard E Grant who scooped the 76th Golden Globe Award for Supporting Actor in
a Motion Picture for his Jack Hock role in a movie titled ‘Can You Forgive
Me?’
His award comes six months after he won the New York Film Critics Circle Award
for Best Supporting Actor last year.
The Golden Globe Awards are accolades bestowed by the 93 members of the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association which began in January 1944, to recognise
excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign.
The 76th Golden Globe Awards, honouring the best in film and television in 2018,
were held on January 6, 2019 at the Beverly Hilton in California, United States
of America where Grant scooped the award.
Such accolades are not new to the United Kingdom-based actor as in his acting
career, he has also won five other awards.
Revealed
Grant’s win comes after he revealed his nomination in early December on his
social media pages.
He expressed his excitement on this Golden Globe Award, stating that it was not
every day where he found himself next to big names.
“Not every day that I find myself seated beside @johnkrasinski Emily Blunt,
Rob Marshall, DICK VAN DYKE!! @benfalcone,  @melissamccarthy at @goldenglobes
and meet @octaviaspencer. WIN WIN WIN,” read his tweet.
Speaking at the Bafta Los Angeles Tea Party, Grant told the Press Association
that he was excited on this particular award.
“I am a complete virgin to all of these award events and I have never been
nominated for things before so I am wide-eyed in Babylon about all of them.
“I feel as star struck as I did when I was 16 years old as I was thrilled to
be in that room with all those people. I cannot believe it,” said Grant.
