Design News has reported that the Design Foundation Awards’ Manufacture Award, sponsored by Bronze Age Studio, was won by Ngwenya Glass, for going beyond expectation to aid designers in realising their products. Design News said the leaders of South African design were honoured on Saturday, November 25 at the fifth annual Design Foundation Awards, in a ceremony held in Cape Town. It was stated that seven awards, lauding the industry’s top achievers in design, manufacture, commercial success and innovation, were sponsored by various forward-thinking local companies, as a new wave of supporters joined the celebration of South African talent. Chas Prettejohn from Ngwenya Glass said to receive recognition beyond local borders was amazing. “We are extremely proud and were not expecting the award. We are really humbled and encouraged to work even harder,” said Prettejohn. The publication said the 2017 awards signalled a fresh approach by the Design Foundation, formerly known as the Southern Guild Design Foundation. It was mentioned that Board member Trevyn McGowan, said: “With our independent think-tank board representing diverse industries, our aim is to have a foundation that supports the design industry at large – from grassroots and educational levels to manufacture, retail and export. Our partners are seeing the value in supporting local design and growing this multi-layered industry together, as we move it away from its association with a collectible design gallery to be run as an autonomous non-profit foundation.”
