MBABANE – The pupil who held on to a two-year dream to score the highest marks
in the kingdom has finally achieved it.
Nothando Adu- Gyamfi became the best Form V pupil when Mhlatane High School
results were released by the Examinations Council of Swaziland (ECoS) on
Tuesday.
Prior to the release of the results, Lo-mthandazo Dlamini from Mhlume High
School was identified as the best pupil in the 2012 Swaziland General
Certificate of Secondary Education (SGCSE) examination.
However, it has emerged that the Mhlatane High School genius scored seven A*s
and an A to topple Lomthandazo who scored six A*s, from the top spot.
In 2010, Nothando had promised suspended School Principal, Simeon Makhubu, that
she would score the best marks nationally in the Junior Certificate examination,
but eventually became second best with a 96 per cent aggregate.
Deputy Principal, Celiwe Mavuso, said they were proud of Nothando’s
achievement and apologised for the delay in the release of the examination
results. "It is unfortunate that she (Nothando) could not receive her
examination results on time. The situation was beyond our control because ECos
had not completed their investigations of alleged malpractice. However, we do
not blame anyone because the exams council had to investigate if they suspected
an anomaly," Mavuso said.

ECoS Registrar, Edmund Mazibuko, confirmed that Mhlatane High School results
were released on Tuesday.
Minister of Education and Training Wilson Ntshangase, said what happened to
Nothando was unfortunate. He said the pupil would be credited for her academic
performance when the best pupils receive their certificates of excellence. "You
will recall that Mazibuko (Registrar) stated that some of the pupils whose
results had been withheld had performed very well, probably she (Nothando) was
one of them.
However, there was nothing much we could have done, because the exams council
had to withhold results until they were done with their investigations,
especially if they suspected any malpractice. However, we are happy for the
pupils’ academic performance and hope they will make it on time to apply to
further their education," said Ntshangase.
Mhlatane High School pupils recently went to the ECoS offices to demand the
release of examination results.
Nothando could not be contacted for comment by the time of compiling this
report; the school’s deputy principal said she was currently visiting her
parents in Cape Town.
