5  Taiwan universities sign MoU with UNISWA

MBABANE – Five univer-sities from the Republic of China on Taiwan have signed
a Memorandum of Under-standing with the University of Swaziland.
These are the reputable Taipei Medical University, the National Pingtung
University of Science and Technology, National Taipei University of Technology,
National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism and the Shih Chien
University.
A delegation of the universities’ principals and Taiwan government officials
led by Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Department of
African Affairs) Mien-Sheng Hsu visited Premier Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini where
they told him of their partnership with UNISWA. "Our main mission to Swaziland
is on the education sector because we know that human resource is key to
development. We are ready to cooperate with you to realise your dreams for the
future. We know that Swaziland has financial problems but we will continue to
assist you in all projects we are involved in," Hsu said.
He promised that there would be an increased provision of scholarships for
Swazis to go and study in the Taiwan universities. "Presently there are seven
Swazis studying in Taiwan, one of them is doing a PhD while the others are
pursuing Masters degrees," Hsu said.
Meanwhile, the prime minister recognised that Taiwan has been a development
partner of exceptional generosity to Swaziland.
"Taiwan has now been kind enough to provide resources for Swaziland to acquire
technical equipment for our primary schools as well as teaching and learning
materials for our Special Education Needs Project. This gift of in excess of
US$1.2 million (about E8.4 million) will have a significant impact in areas of
our education system that, year by year, are taking on a level of importance
which our resources cannot match," the PM said. He said Taiwan’s objective of
designing a programme of assistance that is tailor-made to the education needs
of Swaziland would make a significant contribution to national development. The
PM then thanked the Taiwanese for having given Her Majesty the Indlovukazi great
care during her recent visit to Taiwan and said the Queen Mother harbours good
memories of the visit.
The two countries also assured each other of continued mutual support in the
international arena, especially with Taiwan’s bid to become a member of the
United Nations and its various agencies.
