CELEBRATING MOTHERHOOD

As we celebrate mothers and the roles they play, as well as special spaces they occupy in our lives, it is appropriate to pause and reflect on their significance in making our lives successful.

Mothers wear multifaceted hats and play so many roles in our lives. From the day we are conceived, mothers provide shelter and a conducive atmosphere for growth in the secret – for nine months we are securely housed by these selfless beings without them expecting anything in return except love. Not only do they house us rent free in their bodies, but we get to be fed by the food they consume. This might be a biological design by God, but they still have to put on some weight in order to accommodate the nutritional needs of the baby. Sometimes they carry two or more like in the recent case of nine babies. Mothers, we salute you for not fighting your maternal instincts but embracing them and striving to bring to light that which you carry – today all the people we see and interact with are born by a woman.

It is said that the labour pains you endure repeatedly are incomparable to any physical pain. Yet again, mothers you brave that pain and look beyond it with an expectation of a bundle of joy. Mothers are really special and deserve so much more appreciation than we afford them. The physical sacrifices that they are so willing to go through to bring life to this world is so undervalued. Allow me to salute all of you for carrying the God given mandate of childbirth, despite that others opt to abort.

Mothers are the best hosts and never tire to do the best for their offspring, not minding that when they are older and self-sufficient, they might abandon them. The first days of life are the most critical and it is mum who is there to nurture the infant, she does that with a combination of breast and love. It is mum who is there to calm the young baby, feeding him/her in the wee of the night. It is mum who ensures the cleanliness and warmth of the baby, giving him/her warm baths and dressing-up the baby. It is mum who knows best if there is an abnormal behaviour which might need a doctor’s attention even before it develops into a life-threatening condition. Indeed, mums you are our superheroes and life savers and today we celebrate your kindness and resilience. As the children grow, so do your responsibilities; you quickly become a teacher, and yours needs no qualification because you are the qualification.

Language

You teach us how to be human, giving us context by passing on language for effective communication – no wonder our native language is referred to as our ‘mother-tongue’. Not only do you teach, but you become our biggest cheerleaders, encouraging us to take our first steps; even when we fall numerous times you encourage us to rise up and try one more time – you never give up on us despite our countless unsuccessful attempts.
Once we get the grip of standing, you encourage us to walk thereafter to run; to run and attain our goals in life. Even when we run into trouble you are there to steer us back into the path we should walk. We have witnessed your unwavering support over and over again.

Adding to your growing list of responsibilities, you are not just the greatest chefs, but the best nutritionists in the world. It is normally mothers who will care that the family eats a nutritious and balanced diet. Being the nutritionist that you are, even when out of sight, you insist that our meals have all seven colours representing the nutrients that are needed by the body to remain healthy. Mothers know that food is medicine and its integrity is important to ensure maximisation of its effect in our bodies. Most children can attest that there is no better cook than mum; she prepares the best meals and has the best recipes.

Magic

Mothers are the best nurses under the sun; they have a magic touch that soothes pain and hurt. The countless times we come running to mum with tears streaming down our cheeks, just looking for the reassuring voice and touch have shaped our pain tolerance. In your hands and arms, we have experienced warmth and comfort; we celebrate you our heroes – with you on our side life seems a little bit easier and doable. This nursing role you play knows no bounds, because even in our adulthood you quickly chip in and take care of us especially when hospitalised. Mothers, your love is inspirational indeed, your willingness to leave the comfort of your homes and beds to be a hospital squatter next to the bed of your unwell child.

Your willingness to stay there for the long haul is amazing, not just for one or two days. Fathers love their children, but one rarely finds a father sleeping in hospital corridors because of their sick child. We salute you mothers; your selflessness is beyond what words can explain. To all the mothers out there struggling to put a plate on the table for your family, know that your efforts are acknowledged and today we honour you.
