ADHERENCE TO A SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE

Fundamentalism is described as a “strict adherence to the basic principle of any subject or discipline.”

Such discipline, in my opinion, could be a fanatical belief and adherence to a system of governance like for instance, a democracy, dictatorship, and etcetera. Political leaders in some countries across the globe, for instance, believe in this warped concept of fundamentalism that deny their citizens the right to elect a people-focused and true democratic government, believing that the power they possess is God-ordained, in spite of glaring shortcomings of such systems of governance. When their citizens mention the word “democracy”, such leaders fiercely dig in their heels to the extent of using brutal means to crush the aspirations of their people.

Power

The noun “democracy”, derived from the Greek word “demos” or people, is defined, basically, as a “government in which the supreme power is vested in the people”. In some countries, “democracy can be exercised directly by the people; in large societies, it is by the people through their elected agents”. Since time immemorial, achieving freedom from oppressive governments has rarely come through a silver platter. In many instances, mass protests, (even coups), have been used as a catalyst to achieve freedom from oppressive rule. Some of these protests culminated in bloody confrontations between the ruling class, which stubbornly clings to power, in spite of a writing being on the wall that change is imminent.
Amidst fierce and relentless winds of change blowing across their countries, they relentlessly hold on to power. Unfortunately, some of these confrontations end up in huge and bloody losses of life.

John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States of America, once said, “the great revolution in the history of man, past, present and future, is the revolution of those determined to be free...” Some African governments are notorious for their dictatorial tendencies, where their citizens are subjected to a brutal rule of fear, with a repressive violation of their basic and fundamental human rights. In spite of such countries constitutions providing for the protection of such rights, the onslaught continues, with the desecration of these rights perpetrated with impunity.
