HOPE DOES NOT KILL

I have hope that mistakes of the past will not be repeated. This is because I believe there are certain principles that a living person should live by. Some of those principles are such that a person may be willing to sacrifice not only his or her possession but will make the capital offer to live by.

The person will go the whole length on that principle because he or she cannot live without that principle. Even a country will have certain things that it can never afford not to do. No matter what the budget constraints are but they cannot afford not to finance that particular thing.

It has been proven that the most valuable asset for any institution, government or country is its human resource. No matter what can happen there will always be a need for human resource. Further, the human resource that is at that institutions disposal is the human resource that will maximise the profits of that particular institution or country. That basically means that human resource should be fully equipped with the resources necessary for it to operate at the maximum. That speaks to the tools they must use, the environment necessary for the task, the necessary skill and knowledge for the task etc. Without these the country or institution cannot be guaranteed of success. To acquire the necessary skills one need to engage in education.

This takes me to where my hope is. I notice that tertiary institutions in this country are at the beginning of their academic year. I have heard in our lone broadcasting service that the Government Scholarship Selection Board had been calling students to appear before it. I am sure that the appearance was for the selection of deserving candidates to be awarded the scholarships offered by government. Government should be applauded for granting scholarships to students and help capacitate them.

This to me is a clear indication that government is aware that it needs a force that is educated for it to move forward. This is a good thing because studies have shown that an educated nation has better chances of development because it will have people that are innovative and able to think about how to move the country forward. The people will be able to maximise profits for the country for its development.

The problem though is that we usually have strikes by students in our tertiary institutions. The cause of the strikes is usually government failing to keep their part of the bargain and students will then engage in boycotts to try and force government to make good on their promise. The question is why government is failing to keep their part of the bargain because they are the ones that enter into agreements with the students and under no duress if I may add. It is government who knows how much money it has and the knowledge of how many people it can pay for.

Why is it then that they fail to keep to their promise, thus forcing the student to engage in these actions that are not beneficial to both the students and government? It is a known fact that without a conducive environment, learning cannot be fully realised. It is a fact that government is paying school fees for some students and they expect those students to go to tertiary.

If the students were unable to pay for their school fees it follows that they cannot have money to sustain themselves at tertiary without government giving them their allowances. The allowance is their only source of survival at these institutions. Then government decides not to keep to its promise. In that way the students will not perform fully because learning when hungry is not possible. That may result in the student not performing well or at worst failing. After failing, the student will not be able to pay for him or herself and thus dropping his or her studies. That means government has failed an investment it started years ago when the student entered at grade one. Instead of the student being an asset to government by helping the country go forward, the student would have been a liability.

My wish therefore is for a change this year. I wish to see government fulfilling its part timeously without being forced by boycotts and strikes. This serves no purpose because after delaying to release the money and the students having lost time and the ancillary damages that usually go with the students actions (which is condemned though), government then releases the money.

The question then is why has government not released the money on time to avoid such disturbances? I therefore hope that government will prioritise education this time around and can be willing to let other things go but invest in its human resource because it has been proven that such investment has huge returns.  This is just a hope and hope does not kill.
