THE DOUBLE STANDARDS OF GOSPEL ARTISTS

MBABANE – Bishop Nash Shongwe of the Divine Healing Ministries has come down hard on Gospel artists saying they should practice what they preach.

The Bishop says while the country is known for its talented gospel musicians, most of the artists do not live by their doctrine.
Instead of being role models to the public, Shongwe said these local stars were letting their fans down badly. “ This they have done by using  Gospel music as a business, yet when you sing such music you cannot be seen drinking and having illicit affairs,” said Bishop Nash Shongwe.

He lashed out at the artists for what he perceived as their blatant lack of integrity when making use of his church as a facility for their events.
Shongwe said he had worked with a number of artists in the past where he discovered that some of them were living ‘a double standard live’. He, however, said he would not name any names .

“Artists should understand that before the singing, they should be born again. After that they should live accordingly. Once this has happened, each time they sing, others will repent especially because they would be now turned as role models of the artists,” he said.

Shongwe said he noted in that most people loved gospel music and they believed in the artists. It then becomes an issue when they see artist not living according to their expectations,” he said.  Questioned on what exactly he meant, Shongwe said love affairs and even alcohol consumption were an issue which Gospel artists needed to manage . “ They can not sing  about God and then live sinful lives , that is why I stopped hosting them in my church,” said Shongwe .

Shongwe said it was also important for an artist to be under a leadership of a pastor.
“If an artist does not subscribe to any church, you should know that there is a serious problem. I always encourage artists to have churches. When an artist has to go and perform somewhere, he or she is expected to search permission from his or her own pastor.

This helps as artists are taken serious at all times,” he said. Shongwe said he would always be there for artists who need advice as he was a fan of gospel music.

“I have contributed a lot to some of the artists and I should say I am more than ready to assist artists who might need help. At the end of the day, I want to see them being role models to others and also bring the public closer to Christ,” he said.
