Carolee Vilakati is a 20-year-old beauty whose name makes one think she is not Swazi, and she is used to this notion. She explains that her unique name was given to her by her mother because of its meaning; “She was reading a book while I was pregnant and there was a character named Carolee, and apparently the meaning of the word is ‘Mysteries of the deep’  so she decided to name me Carolee,” she explains.

Born and bred in Manzini she attended her primary and high school education in South Africa at Highveld’s Comprehensive where she completed in 2012.  “Waiting for my sponsorship to come through, I decided to take up modelling with Top Models agency as it is one thing I envied as a young girl. Growing up people would compliment me on my height and that’s where I got the confidence to give it a shot,” she says. Mbali Manana, the Director of Top Models loved her instantly and took her under her wing. Carolee remembers her very first ramp show, which was very interesting in the sense that they did no rehearse for it.

“We had been invited to the Food Expo at Sibane as Top Models girls and when we arrived, some designers were short of models. We had no choice but to take to the ramp without any pre-rehearsal, we just had to choose the clothes that fit each one of us well and ‘work it’! I was nervous at first but I just glided down the runway and loved every minute of it,” she says.

Growing up with four siblings and her mother, Carolee says she feels so blessed to have their support. Her siblings and mother try to attend all her fashion shows. “My mother is adamant about one thing; she wants me to make sure I complete my studies and have a good career base. That said,  I have enrolled at Limkwokwing  University and will be studying towards a degree in Business and IT, she says.

However, she is also quick to add that beauty is one passion that she will never let go of. “I plan on excelling in my studies, having a solid career and I want to study part-time  at  Camelot Beauty School. I love all things about beauty; from taking care of your skin, make-up to the clothes,” she says.

“It really breaks my heart to see young women damage themselves by being anorexic. One needs to understand that curvy is beautiful too and now has a huge market,” she says. She makes reference to Pabi Moloi who is now the face of Avon and also walks on a few runway shows in SA. Her one wish is to grace the ramp and compete at the Africa Next Top Model competition. “I believe I have what it takes and I will definately go for it.”

Its good to praise someone for their beauty, but dear journalist how can you say 'her beauty makes you think she is not swazi'? That is an insult to us swazis. You are simply saying swazis are UGLY. I wonder what the 'editor' said when he edited this!
