MBABANE – Is it a co-sign?

Actor Sithembiso Kunene has shown that hard work does pay off with the recent recognition he has received from Sprite-SA. Kunene has been on our radar for all the brilliant work he had been doing like bagging a role in a Mzansi Magic series, Gomora. With Kunene, the official Sprite page on Instagram posted a video of the actor, where he holds a can of the soft drink with his hand and proceeds to act like he is kicking it. There are a number of huge deals that have come out of such. When reached for comment, Kunene highlighted he had not made a deal yet with the brand and he too was shocked when he was posted on their page.

Recognised

“I saw the post and was shocked but for now it is just a co-sign as no deal has been made and we are not in talks of any kind, but do appreciate being recognised,” he further said. A co-sign is when an artist, usually someone with commercial success, gives a different artist, often someone still relatively unkwown, a shout-out by acknowledging that they like their music. Co-signs also occur when successful artists allow upcoming artists to be featured on their songs. Co-signs fuel why every artist is commercially popular today. Most Hip Hop artists at one point in their career was given a co-sign, which was the main reason why they were able to achieve mainstream success.

Diversity

It’s every artist’s dream to receive some kind of co-sign from another artist. Without co-signs, artist diversity in Hip Hop would be hyped. Artists such as Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and Chance the Rapper, all received co-signs. Whereas in recent times a co-sign is an act of a reputable person or brand showing love to someone, thus giving them more relevance and in all essence linking each other. This publication has covered a number of co-signs including; Uncle Waffles being followed by USA rapper, Drake, Nhlonipho Dlamini being posted by former Black Motion member Mdu Bongz and Thembinkhosi Mabuza by DJ Tira and DBN Gogo.

Partnership

It is worth noting that this is the same way how Uncle Waffles came into partnership with the brand. The reputable, international DJ had a video of herself drinking Sprite then weeks later, she shared a paid partnership video with the brand where she switches outfits after having a sip of the drink captioned ‘#Heat happens’. He has recently been empowering the youth in the kingdom to take risks and challenges in pursuit of their dreams after he auditioned for MTV Shuga and made his process public. Kunene in his own right has a humbling back story where he was driven by passion and hard work to get to the space where he is today, getting such huge co-signs. We will be watching this co-sign closely as the saying goes, ‘there is no smoke without fire’.
