MBABANE – With the success of the Seychelles Fashion Week graced by a local model, the upcoming Paris Fashion Week committee has extended an invitation to emaSwati to participate in its future shows.

The fifth edition of Seychelles Fashion Week came to an end on October 1 this year. It was held at Maison Marengo and on that runway, spectacular local model Nolwazi Simelane, better known as Snowee, wowed the attendees so much so that the recruitment committee from the Paris Fashion Week spoke to the organisers from Seychelles to invite more models from Eswatini for their February show. Paris Fashion Week is a series of designer presentations held semi-annually in Paris, France, to showcase spring, summer, autumn and winter latest fashion trends. The dates of the fashion shows are determined by the French Fashion Federation. Paris Fashion Week is held at venues throughout the city.

Fashion

It is part of the global ‘Big four’ fashion weeks, others are; London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. The calendar begins with New York, followed by London, then Milan and ends in Paris. It is worth noting that no one from Eswatini has ever walked the runway in either of these shows. In fact, Snowee was the first local model to walk a runway where people from various countries globally were in attendance. When reached for comment about the latest development, the local model said: “Such an invitation is a huge milestone for the country’s fashion industry. One shouldn’t take it lightly since Paris is one of the hubs of fashion. An opportunity to work there is a full career swing.”

Recognition

Simelane is also the reason the country got  recognition, because in Seychelles she walked in full couture from local and international designers namely; Darren, Nigel, Vanessa Songwar from Seychelles, Sistas Felas, Zamaswazi, Precious Lulu from SA, Romeo Paul from Qatar, Dwi Iskandar from Indonesia, Armando Azevedo and Araba Hackman from United Kingdom (UK). Terry Carolla, Managing Director of the Seychelles Fashion Week, got a request where the international supermodel was sighted. “Our show displayed an array of creativity from all the designers which was greatly appreciated by the audience, the young models showcasing their talents for the first time in a fashion week did a tremendous job, alongside other more experienced models.

Invite

“This extended invite to scout for strong and worthy models didn’t come as a surprise as Snowee was a show stopper and because most people do not know of Eswatini, they were keen on finding out more about how and where such talent came from,” said Carolla. The first of the Seychelles Fashion week took place on la Digue on September 28 this year. It’s worth noting that for the first time in history, the Island hotel La Digue Lodge, hosted six designers and 25 models all at once. This created a buzz on the island and across the fashion scope converging into a very good turnout for the show.
