EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL FOR ESWATINI

Mbabane – Save the date!

Next month promises to be an exciting month for film enthusiasts and film-makers alike, as the European Film Festival comes to Eswatini. As part of the European Film Festival in South Africa (SA), a three-day programme of screenings and discussions will take place at the Alliance Française in Mbabane between October 21 and 23 this year. Now in its ninth year, the European Film Festival is a partnership project of the European Union. Delegation to SA and participating embassies and cultural agencies. Europe is home to many highly developed film industries reflecting a diverse range of approaches to filmmaking, those with popular commercial appeal as well as those for niche interest groups and lovers of arthouse cinema.

When reached for comment Cultural Coordinator Karyn Groening about the festival said, “This year’s extension to Eswatini and Lesotho is an opportunity for new audiences to see award-winning films, that are unlikely to reach local screens in these countries, ‘‘said Groening. She went on to say that a cornerstone of the programme is the presentation of one of the most exceptional Swati stories in recent history, the multi-award winning Liyana was an Oscar contender for the Best International Feature Film in 2021,  The Man Who Sold His Skin and Lesotho’s first Oscar submission This Is Not A Burial, it’s a Resurrection which has also won numerous awards around the world. “The two African films, Liyana and This Is Not A Burial, It’s a Resurrection, demonstrate the exciting potential for filmmaking that exists in Eswatini and Lesotho,” said the coordinator.
