KWALUSENI – The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) gave out a higher amount for the Fresher’s Ball, compared to the last one in 2019.

The ball made a smooth return this year, after it was halted due to COVID-19 for the past two years. The event was held at UNESWA Kwaluseni Campus last week Friday; students came in their numbers for the event. The theme was strictly formal wear as it has been in previous years. The event kicked off with a dinner which was hosted at the Sports Emporium Hall.  The dinner was followed by a parade of first year students who participated in this year’s competition.

Success

Organizing the last ball in 2019, sources close to this publication revealed that the University issued E90 000 to host the event, which was also a success. A credible source working as part of the Students Representative Council (SRC) revealed that for the recent one that was held last week, they signed a E120 000 agreement to organise and host it this year’s. “It was raised last year to E120k, following a probe by the then SRC representatives as the 90K from the last fresher’s ball was seen to be not sufficient enough in catering for all the necessities of the fresher’s ball” the source said.
The recent ball featured South African (SA) Amapiano musician Miano who performed for the students during the event. He performed at the after party which was hosted at Ekhayeni Chillaz.

Payments

The Director of entertainment for Kwaluseni Campus Mongie “Sintour” Simelane revealed that the payments they made to Miano, was part of his appearance at the ball and for his after party performance. “We paid Miano E12 000, excluding his transportation fee, accommodation fee and his entourage, which included a platter for four. Therefore I can say that roughly we spent E20 000 on him for gracing our stage for this year’s Fresher’s Ball,” said Simelane. The Director of Finance Sibusiso Nhlabatsi from Kwaluseni SRC said the ball was well executed this year. “The Fresher’s Ball went well, even though we encountered some few challenges but we managed to overcome them.

Platform

It was also a great platform for socialising and allowed students to get to know each other better” Nhlabatsi said. Due to fear of being victimised by students, the director of finance, opted not to comment on the E120 000 given by the university to organise the event. The SRC Chairperson Gabi Ndukuya applauded this year’s event, labelling it a delightful event. “It was a beautiful event which was also successful. However, there were challenges with catering as the student ate late after 10PM,” Ndukuya said. She went on to express her gratitude to the university for supporting them in hosting this year’s event. “We are also grateful to the university for allowing us such an opportunity and supporting us financially for the event” Ndukuya said.

The Mbabane Campus hosted its ball last week Friday at UNESWA Sports Emporium Hall. Students also came in their numbers to witness the proceedings of the event.
