FEMALE DJS FORM IMBOKODVO MOVEMENT

MBABANE – When women come together, magic happens!

A group of female of DJs has ccome together and formed an organisation. So far, seven female DJs have come together for growth and development in Eswatini by starting a company called the Imbokodvo Movement. Currently the movement consist of; DJs Lady Cream, DJ Lady Zee, DJ Lolo, DJ Expo, DJ Black Pearl, DJ Takitsi SD and DJ Phenomenal. As the famous slogan goes, ‘Wathintabafaziwatint’ imbokodvo’ loosely translated to, ‘when you strike women you strike a rock’. Imbokodvo Movement is a women-centered organisation aimed at empowering women in the entertainment industry. The movement seeks to create a platform where women can contribute to the value chain as a whole in the industry, while breaking barriers of what is known as a man’s world.

They also seek to help women break away from being vulnerable to different types of abuse and discrepancies that are usually experienced in the industry.  Founded by Eswatini’s veteran female spinner, Nontobeko Dlamini, also known as DJ Lady Cream in May this year, the platform was established to serve the interests of female DJs. When reached for comment DJ Lady Cream said; “I just saw a loophole in female DJ’s being booked in the country and I felt it was time us females do our own thing and not wait to be booked.” She continued to say; “There are a lot of upcoming female DJs who do not have the resources and do not know where to play, this is where we will come in.”

Platform

This platform seeks to develop every aspect of the entertainment production line. From performers, to event promoters, artist management, public relations,bloggers, stylists, graphic designers, video/music directors, editors and producers among others. This movement seeks to empower female artists in skills development, create a space for networking as well as build a sustainable, conducive and marketable industry. Since its inception, the movement hosted its first installment early this month at Polar Park in Mlindazwe. Well known female DJs such as Lady Cream,Lady Zee, Lolo and Expo rendered stellar performances at the event, while Sandzi was the hostess.

DJ Lady Zee was reached for a comment pertaining the Imbokodvo Movement and she said; “It is one of its kind and I’m hoping it is going to grow into something bigger and better. Looking at the fact that we are women coming together to make this happen, is an achievement on its own.” The next installment will be at Mega Lounge in Mbabane on July 23, followed by a family fun day on July 30 in Pigg’s Peak. The official event launch will be hosted at Solani’s Shisanyama and dates will be communicated soon. The company is urging event organizers and venue owners who would like to partner with them to come forward. They have also pleaded with companies to assist in terms of sponsorship.
