MAJALIBHUNU WORKING WITH CHILDREN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

MBABANE – Maskandi artist Mlondie Mamba also known as Majalibhunu Maskandi will be giving free music lessons to children in Siphofaneni.

The artist has been working with children interested in music and teaching them maskandi music. Maskandi is a kind of Zulu folk music that is evolving with African society. This music has been described by EThekwini online  as “The music played by the man on the move, the modern minstrel, today’s troubadour.

Majalibhunu started this initiative by giving children free lessons on how to become musicians, and how to record. When reached for a comment, the artist explained more about the lessons. “I have observed that the young generation in my community look up to me, and have the hunger to make Maskandi music,” said the artist. He added that as their mentor it’s important to teach them how to be dedicated if they wanted to pursue music as a career. The Maskandi musician further said he’s helped upcoming musicians namely; Emkhulandle, Emavungandze, Carvela, Omega whom are all professional musicians in the music industry of Eswatini.Mamba said he fell in love with Maskandi music when he was growing up.

Interest

His grandfather used to listen to the genre all the time, which sparked his interest to become a Maskandi artist. Fast forward to 2010, he started working with other Maskandi musicians in pursuit of his passion for music. He then started working on his own in 2012. The artist shared that he always looked up to Mgqumeni Khumalo for inspiration and motivation in his musical journey. It is worthnothing the Maskandi  artist has shared the stage with other artists namely;  Khuzani Mpungose, Dr Buselaphi, Bonakele,Bahubhe,Donny Mngwenyama, Frans Dlamini, Mshikishi Mdzebele,Simmy, DJ Fundo just to name a few.

He’s also performed with other artists such as; Illa Pennboy, Linda Dlamini, Twasa lekhansela, Simiso Khumalo, Mlabalaba Khumalo and Ithole Lendidane. The multi-award nominee won Best Maskandi Artist award at the 2018 SWAMAs (Swaziland Arts and Music Awards); in the same year he performed in Zimbabwe. He also won Best Maskandi Artist at the 2019 SWAMAs. Majalibhunu was also nominated at the MBA (Mlwazet Bavundulele Awards) for Best Maskandi Artist in Durban in December 2021. This year he’s releasing his latest album which is coming out in August. This will be his eighth album to date.  He mentioned that this album will be something new and different since he has also ventured into Afro pop music.
