MBABANE – Eswatini TV now has 20 locally produced shows airing on the channel.

This is excluding the channel’s already existing programmes which are produced in-house like ‘‘The Beat Down’ which is hosted by Mangaliso ‘Elfoe’ Masilela. This is an initiative the channel has afforded emaSwati who can produce local content to air at a fee, something that was non-existed years ago. The channel’s Communications Officer, Nompumelelo Dlamini, disclosed this in a telephonic interview. “Eswatini TV now has 20 programmes from local independent producers that air their content with the channel,” she said. Dlamini went on to add that the channel was also looking at adding more drama and or series programmes from local producers. She said the producers are paid for airing their shows since they have to obtain the rights to broadcast but said she would not be able to divulge the exact amount that the producers are paid.

Dlamini also shared that they currently had 20 local programmes on Eswatini TV which include Kusile Breakfast Show. It is a current affairs show for an audience that seeks to be updated on current issues going on within and beyond the borders. Among the 20 programmes that air is ‘Phanda Estradini’, (Husting on the streets) a street hustle reality show which follows hustlers around, giving viewers a sneak peak of what it is like in a day of a hustler. According to Dlamini, the aim of the show was to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth in the country so as to close the unemployment gap, reducing the crime rate while helping alleviate poverty in the country. Other notable shows include ‘Simanga’ (The Inheritance), ‘The Village and Kudla Kwemphilo’- a farming reality show approved by the Ministry of Agriculture to use intellectual properties for training and disseminate accurate information on all things agriculture locally. One of the independent producers, who preferred to remain anonymous shared that his experience working with the channel has been great so far.

disclosed

*Mlondi Nkambule disclosed that it was great for local television to promote local producers’ content. However, he pointed out that it was still a long way to go in terms of being paid to produce content locally. He decried that it was not enough compared to the expenses that come with producing the shows themselves were high. Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture Chief Executive Officer Stanley Dlamini applauded Eswatini TV for promoting local talent.
