MBABANE – Breaking records.

The nomination phase of the Digital 4th MTN SWAMA Awards has broken a four year record as 12 000 nominations were received in only two weeks. The nomination phase opened on October 12, 2020 and closed last Friday, October 23, 2020, making it the shortest period in the history of these awards. In previous years, a month was reserved for this phase, which preluded that of public voting.  Last year, for instance, about 1 070 entries had been received, which translated to 344 after vetting. Vetting involves removing multiple bids and retaining only one per suggested nominee.

Notwithstanding the two week period this year, a record 7 150 nominees were received via the SMS short code 6161, and another 5 300 via the all-new Ayoba app. However, it should be noted that a significant number of these nominees were repeat entries (a repeat entry is a nomination that is sent more than once).

SWAMA Public Relations Officer Bongani Dj Tizalami Dube said the data was currently with an independent panel of adjudicators who are vetting and selecting the eventual successful nominees in each category. He said the successful nominees will be revealed at the Digital Nominees Unveiling Party scheduled for this Saturday, October 31, 2020 at 8pm on Eswatini TV.  The unveiling party, he said, shall be simulcast on the MTN Eswatini Facebook Page, as well as the SWAMA YouTube Channel.
