EZULWINI – The Sunday Hangout Experience is setting a pace for light to be shone on events and entertainment gatherings.

On Sunday, which was also a day the country celebrated its 52nd independence, Platinum Concepts under the stewardship of Khulekani ‘Karly B’ Mamba hosted the first in what may become a monthly gathering for entertainers and patrons in the country.

The event started a little behind schedule as at 3pm fun lovers were still making their way to the venue which was at the Sibaya Garden, Emfuleni Lifestyle.

As the month of September also marked the beginning of spring, fun lovers showcased adherence to this new season by wearing short and skimpy clothing that showed of some skin.

Adherence

Not only was the adherence towards the season but the COVID-19 guidelines as they wore masks and face shields to prevent the spread of the pandemic, which shut down this sector six months ago.

Essentially, this event marked a first of many possible events that would follow pending the government’s stand on entertainment gatherings.

The event kicked off with performances from Master P the DJ, who serenaded the less than 100 crowd of people with hip hop and RnB hits from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, evoking nostalgia on them.

He spinned the decks for over 45 minutes while the MC of the event, King Terry, real name Akhona Bhengu went around the different stalls that were set up to shed information on what exactly was being sold them.

Master P’s set was followed by podcaster, baker and musician Samantha Rudd, who also goes by the name BHUBESI.

Rudd melted the crowd’s hearts with her neo soul and RnB vocals that brought Jill Scott vibes to the event.

As a multi-talented young lady, she was able to draw the crowd’s attention for over 30 minutes until she got off stage to tell the fun lovers about her cake business, which also had a stall at the event.

Section

To make sure that social distancing and masks were worn, Karly B would from time-to-time remind the fun lovers to keep their masks on and keep to their groups, which were up to five people per section.

As advertised on their posters, these were groups that had come together from the same family or community.

Emfuleni Lifestyle had not had this much activity in a while as one waitress commented. Food and drinks orders were sent through and collected by the waiters and waitresses from the establishment and brought to the people who had ordered them.  As the slanting rays of the setting sun gave a warm orange tinge to the sky, saxophonist Zwile took to the stage, where he hypnotised the crowd with his cheerful renditions of arranged song titles and he would often sing using the auto tune technique. His performance was marked as one of the best, where he shared the stage with some of his friends, which included Denzel, Sihlangu, KrTC and Yemaa. Although Yemaa debuted as an artist virtually, through a live stream by Daniel Toro TV, the newcomer, who is also a former MTN Spotlight finalist made her first public performance on Sunday.  She blew the crowd away with renditions of her own compositions as well as Beyoncé Knowles hit songs, which brought revellers towards the front of the stage to dance their butts off.

Favourite

The event came to a close as DJ Ntombs took to the stage and dished out the crowd’s favourite house, kwaito and hip hop hits.

Speaking to Mamba, who was part of the organisers of the event highlighted that as a team they agreed to pay for all expenses relating to hosting the event. They would then share whatever was left amongst all artists who performed.

“It sure is heart-warming to note that most of the team members solely depend on their talents for income and will have something to take home for the first time in six months.

He shared that through this event they were hoping to introduce a new concept celebrating the beauty of live stage performances, while fusing it with DJ sets.

Experience

“We are hoping to have it as a monthly experience, headlining different artists on each and through this, we hope to provide the much needed platform to Eswatini arts, while presenting a memorable experience to the masses,” he added.

Although they were happy with the turnout of people at the event, Mamba said they unfortunately had to cut off at some point due to the limits they had set in their bid to play a part in ensuring the safety of people.

“We would love to appreciate all that came through for adhering to the new normal in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19. We had very little to worry about, as from time to time we had to remind some to maintain the social distancing and keep their masks on,” he concluded.
