MBABANE – Officially launched.

The Minister for Sports Culture and Youth Affairs, Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga launched the Lockdown Gospel Music Awards (LOGMA) in a glitzy event that was held at The George Hotel in Manzini on Saturday. The event was attended by a few invited members of the public, who included gospel artists, sponsors as well as members of the organising committee. The event was also simulcast live on Facebook through the Destiny Group, Destiny Group visuals and the Association of Christian Artists in Eswatini (ACAESWA) Facebook pages. They totalled to close to 20 people, with the rest of the people watching from home.

Launched

With over 3 000 viewers at home, the minister declared the awards officially launched and that they would take place in November 2020. The LOGMAs, which were previously called the Eswatini Gospel Music Awards, changed the name to be relevant to the era of the coronavirus pandemic that we live in. Speaking at the launch of the awards, President for ACAESWA, Phetsile Masilela lauded artists for carrying on with their ministry during the times of the pandemic. She highlighted that living in the times of COVID-19 had introduced new ways of doing things, which needed to be embraced such as using the internet for broadcasting events. Masilela took a moment to appreciate the sponsors that believed in the association and the awards to empower artists.

Relief

“I would like to encourage the government to support us as artists with the relief fund and passing the laws for royalty fees,” she said. She encouraged artists to subscribe to the association to benefit from it as it was solely there for the purpose to empower artists. Old Mutual through the representation of Siphiwe Sibandze said the institution had a proud history of supporting the arts in Eswatini as one of their core mandates was serving the local communities. Sibandze revealed that they would be providing financial education among other things to artists. Patrick Gamedze, who is the chairperson for the awards, revealed that categories for the awards would cover the 2018/2019 musical period, where the public would nominate their favourite gospel musicians based on songs released in that period. “The public will make nominations for the awards based on the influence the musicians had in their lives through the COVID-19 period,” he said.
