MATSAPHA – The Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) is the Swaziland Tertiary Institutions Choral Music Competition champions!
The institution was handed the crown after being announced as overall winners this past Saturday at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), Kwaluseni Sports Emporium.

This was during the annual Swaziland Tertiary Institutions Choral Music Competition.
The aforementioned tertiary institution accumulated 171 points during the competition. In the highly charged competition, SANU was closely followed by Ngwane College, fully known as Ngwane Teachers Training College, which amassed 167 points.
In third position was UNESWA with 162 points.

knowledge

To beat all the other tertiary institutions, SANU exhibited greater knowledge and talent in music by scooping position one under Mixed A with 84 and 87 points for western and traditional pieces, respectively.
Meanwhile, Ngwane College scooped 82 points under the rendition of the traditional piece and 85 points for a western song while UNESWA scooped 80 points for the former and 82 for the latter.

After SANU’s triumph, Melisizwe Zwane, who is their conductor, was over the moon with his choir’s proficiency.
“It is an exciting win. It was my first time conducting in this competition. I only joined SANU three weeks ago, which makes the victory even sweeter. We worked with a very committed choir led by a technical team that supported me fully,” said Zwane.

Furthermore, he said his motto to all the choirs he led was that ‘the key is the willingness to complement talent with hard work and a hunger to keep learning’.
“I probably would not achieve anything if I was not willing to work hard and learn constantly. This competition was another learning curve for me and it is one that I appreciate greatly.”

leadership

It is worth noting that Zwane is also the conductor for His Majesty’s Correctional Services Choir. This is the same choir that won the Old Mutual National Choral Festival in South Africa, three years ago, under his leadership.
Fans had come in numbers to witness the dexterity of the choirs. Nothando Dlamini and Lungelo Msibi said the competition was tough and they were not sure which choir would win.

“However, the traditional piece must have really given SANU the overall win. They were so great at it,” they said.
SANU was awarded E3 000 while Ngwane College received E1 200 and UNESWA was appreciated with E800.
