MBABANE – Go big or go home!

This is a popular phrase which Eswatini-born artist in diaspora Flameboy Universe, real name Sakhile Mavimbela, has abided by in his music career after emerging a few years ago.
Just after signing a deal with the internationally renowned stable Sony Music, the MTN SWAMA Awards 217 ‘Newcomer of the Year’ winner has emerged with 132 000 streams on  SoundCloud. The streams are for his song ‘Believe me’.

SoundCloud is a European online audio distribution platform and music sharing website based in Berlin, Germany that enables its users to upload, promote, and share audio. SoundCloud has been a principal force for independent artists as streaming music became the de facto way most people listen to tunes. While music services like Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora have been instrumental in popularising streaming with listeners, the easy uploads of SoundCloud, along with YouTube, have made them powerful tools for performers to get their music out, sometimes reaching heights of popularity once limited to stars backed by a major label.

Chance the Rapper, for example, made a name for himself without a label via mixtapes posted to SoundCloud and won the Grammy for best new artist last year. SoundCloud Premier pays artists a revenue share of 55 per cent for their sound recordings. Spotify, by comparison, pays 50 per cent. Like others, SoundCloud pays publishing royalties to whoever owns that right, so if you write and record the music you upload, you’ll get those payments too.  To qualify for SoundCloud Premier monetisation, your music must be original, with you controlling all the copyrights to it. You need to be 18 years old (or whatever age makes you a legal adult in your country of residence), and you can’t have any copyright infringement ‘strikes’ against your account when you enroll.

‘Believe me’ was officially dropped in 2016 and it was featured in Flameboy Universe’s album titled ‘Rich People’, which was dropped over a year later.  It is worth noting that the song hit the stated numbers this year. Flameboy Universe confirmed that the song had hit the numbers, expressing his excitement.
