REVEALED: MTN SWAMA AWARDS DRESS THEME
MBABANE – The MTN SWAMA Awards team is determined to see ‘serious’ fashion statements on the yellow carpet!
This was said when the dress theme for this year’s prestigious annual MTN SWAMA Awards was being revealed. In a statement, the awards’ spokesperson Penny Bouwer said ‘Glitz and glamour’ was this year’s theme.
“While the broader theme for this year’s MTN SWAMA Awards is ‘Monetize your music’, a befitting dress theme that resonates with showbiz grandeur and excellence is ‘Glitz and glamour’. This, therefore, throws the gauntlet to artists and their image creators to think outside the box in designing glamorous outfits that will proverbially ‘steal the show’,” said Bouwer.
Further explaining the theme, Bouwer said they deliberately avoided a colour-based theme, as they wanted nominees and their outfit designers to exercise unhindered creativity in portraying glitz and glamour.
“We are fully aware that some nominees already have their outfits figured out by now, and needless to say, they were fully cognisant of how glamorous an event the MTN SWAMAs are. Fashion police will be all out on patrol on the night, scanning through the yellow carpet arrivals, hence there is every reason to look the part,” urged Bouwer.
Nominees
Meanwhile, several nominees have welcomed this year’s MTN SWAMAs dress theme, stating that precedence had already been set in as far as dressing to the nines was concerned. “You will recall that the last two MTN SWAMAs introduced us to the yellow carpet grand entrance walk, and we’ve always had our A-game in as far as strutting our stuff is concerned. So the ‘Glitz and glamour’ theme is quite timely and appropriate,” said artist manager, Buyi Cele, also known as ‘Miss Bling’.
Hip hop artist M Nation, real name Wandile Ndlovu, said he embraced the dress theme, and said glitz and glamour in hip hop was part of the subculture. He singled American rappers Jay Z and Diddy, as well as new school rappers like Roddy Ricch and Tyga, as fashion icons, citing how these would occasionally wear dapper suits at awards nights.
“We simply have to kill it right from the entrance up to the time we accept the awards on the stage,” he said.
Renowned fashion designer and sought-after tailor Sabatini Mamba, of ‘Dressed by Saba’, said she was excited to see Eswatini artists embrace the importance of image creation and grooming. She said local designers were leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that they created outfits that will leave lasting imprints in people’s memories. Last year, the theme was ‘Emvembili- Back to the Future’ and it encouraged people to wear African vintage and Eswatini traditional regalia.
The MTN SWAMAs dress theme applies to all guests who will grace this year’s event slated for December 7, 2019 at the Royal Swazi Convention Centre. A total of 20 awards are expected to be announced and given out on the night. The MTN SWAMAs have the biggest sponsorship in any awards show in the country, with leading mobile cellular network operator MTN Eswatini pumping in a staggering E740 000 this year.
