MBABANE – Matamza is E1 000 richer! This is after he, real name Thami Zwane, won the stated amount in a battle called ‘Amapiano Armageddon’ at Solani’s Shisanyama at Msunduza in Mbabane. he got the loudest cheers from the crowd for his set.

The inaugural ‘Amapiano Armageddon’ is meant to promote the knowledge of amapiano house music genre which has recently gained popularity. The competition is also meant to improve the way in which the amapiano DJs perform and engage with the crowd during their sets.

Matamza, one of the most popular amapiano DJs in the country, won against Eswatini ‘bull’ in the genre Tilungu Shongwe, stage name Tilungu, and South Africa’s Vuyo Xavell who goes by the name Xavell in the music industry.
Tilungu and Matamza are an Eswatini amapiano duo that is usually spotted performing together and Xavell is regarded as one of South Africa’s amapiano kings.

Matamza won through rendering a vibrant 20-minute set that each of the three DJs was allocated with.
He was the first to enter the stage and he was breathing fire from the very first song that he rendered. He dished out tracks of the genre which made the attendees dance lively.

screams

After his set, there were loud screams and cheers from the crowd.
Another DJ who earned loud cheers was South Africa’s Xavell, who dished out trending amapiano and some were underground but they managed to make fun lovers dance. Fun lovers mainly reacted to his set by performing the pouncing cat dance which has also become very popular.

Tilungu was also a marvel to watch as he calmly rendered underground and known amapiano songs.
The popular track which all the DJs played was ‘Labantwana Ama Uber’ by Semi Tee featuring Miano and Kammu Dee. It is worth noting that this song is currently on the top charts in South African radio stations and is a current club banger, which many people love and sing along to.
After their sets, the three DJs (Matamza, Xavell and Tilungu) were made to stand in front of the crowd and Matamza was an obvious winner as he had louder scream than the two DJs.

Matamza danced in victory and was given the E1 000 cash on the spot.
In an interview with this journalist, the champion said he was happy with the results.
“I somehow cannot believe that I won. I was competing so my name is not known for the ultimate prize.

“For me, this battle was not about the money but to show my passion for the genre to Eswatini fun lovers,” said Matamza.
Matamza said his secret in rendering the best set was to engage with the crowd and dance for it while performing.

disappointed

Tilungu said he was not really disappointed by the results.
“I respect Matamza and his knowledge of amapiano. He deserves it,” he said.
Ncamiso Dlamini, who is one of the patrons at the hotspot and a self-confessed lover of amapiano, said the competition was tight and the DJs were at the same level in impressing the crowd.

“We enjoyed each and every set,” she said.
Solani’s Shisanyama Entertainment Co-ordinator Thandukwazi Hadebe said he had always been amazed by the participation of the patrons during these kinds of battles that they hosted.

“The crowd decided and they chose Matamza,” he said.
He also said people should stay tuned for the next battle.

‘Amapiano Armageddon’ is not the first battle that the hangout spot has hosted. They have hosted the ‘Hip Hop Battle’ where Supa CDQ, real name Linda Dlamini, won and ‘Commercial Collision’ where Sgitha, real name Thabiso Khumalo won.
