MBABANE – Sometimes life takes over and you have to make the difficult decision to suspend your studies in favour of finding work.

The reasons for this vary; from needing employment so you can give financial assistance at home to being offered an opportunity that’s too great to pass up.
Whether it’s to pursue a passion or to enter the working world, it can be difficult to return to your studies, but local comedian, Dr Shakes and actor Thembinkosi Mthethwa have made a decision to go back to school.

The two joined hundreds of students at the Institute of Research Management & Development (IRDM) College after securing scholarships to study towards a Diploma in Business Management and Leadership. IRDM is a higher education Institute that is registered with the Eswatini Higher Education Council (SHEC).
The famous personalities joined other well-known faces in Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze and former Miss Eswatini Samukeliso Magagula, who have previously enrolled at the institute.

Comedian Dr Shakes, whose real name is Bonginkosi Dlamini, confirmed he got a scholarship to study at the college after he personally approached its management. He said he was excited to be in class as this would make him a professional comedian and also widen his options. He used to attend school at Ka-Boyce High.

These two artists are being sponsored by the college and they said they were grateful for this as they dearly wanted it.
“I personally approached the Institution for career guidance and to enrol, met the executive director whom together we agreed that we’ll advocate for more young people and fellow artists to improve them through education.  So far my classes are so amazing, the institute has full-time lecturers that are always available, and I do not regret the choice of college. You can come witness the experience,” Dr Shakes said.

On the other hand, Mthethwa, a voice over artist and theatre artist, described how the college had helped him so far as he has previously enrolled in Speech and Drama at WITS.
“In the past few days I have been to class, I have realised that as artists, it’s important to acquire knowledge that helps you in managing yourself and becoming professional,” Mthethwa said. IRDM Marketing Officer Bathulile Khayoni also confirmed the exciting news while adding that their aim was to contribute to the arts industry through the provision of quality education.
