MBABANE – According to experts, if inaccurate net worth information is circulated, a downfall becomes imminent.

This comes after a few weeks ago, Facebook users woke up to the shocking list labelled ‘2019 Eswatini top 10 richest rappers’ after it was posted on the page ‘Eswatini Hip Hop Magazine’. Music followers, local artists and promoters did not take kindly to the list as they said it was degrading and defamatory.

Local artists neither found the list inspiring nor funny as they described it as unnecessary and degrading. It is worth noting that the list will not be published in this platform as it has elements of defamation which cannot be repeated.

When the list came to light, a number of Facebook users hastily pushed for the admin of the page to delete the post as they claimed it was damaging the image of the local music industry, but the minder of the page was having none of it. Instead, the founder shifted attention to the public and blamed it for not supporting local artists.

According to the admin of the page, the lack of support has led to artists not having enough money in their bank accounts.
Speaking on behalf of SWAMA (Eswatini Arts and Music Association), Penny Bouwer said it must be noted that the list was unfounded without any officially investigated statistics and must be ignored.

“It is unfortunate that Eswatini Hip Hop Magazine released this list as it is giving the rest of the world an unconfirmed report, furthermore degrading the professionalism of the music industry. This is definitely not the type of publicity that the kingdom needs as it portrays us in a comical light, whereas we are still developing industry regulations,” she said.

However, she also mentioned that the list had sparked interest within the industry and she appreciated the magazine for attempting to highlight artist rankings.

Globally

“This is something done globally, which shows the business thinking side of the industry. Our advice to such list-makers is to seek guidance and authenticate their information from the relevant parties first, before causing unnecessary confusion or harm to artist portfolios,” she concluded.
One of the artists mentioned on the list was Kena and is positioned at number eight.
