MBABANE – Are Eswatini country music artists a crème de la crème of the genre?

The above question seems to be affirmative, because not long after Eswatini country duo Dusty and Stones were invited to Texas Sound Country Music Awards, the same entity has nominated country musician Cleopatra Methula under three categories.

Methula was nominated under ‘Best Entertainer’, ‘Best Vocalist’ and ‘Best Songwriter’ under the International Acts section.
Not only was the ‘Imali’ hit-maker nominated in the internationally renowned three-day awards ceremony, but she was also invited to perform. Methula’s luck struck just after she performed at the inaugural Eswatini Country Music Festival and the renowned Swazi Rally which was turning 25 years this year.

International

These awards, will be held in the United States of America in Texas, set for 2019.
Methula said it was always her dream be incorporated in massive country music festivals and/or shows, where artists from different countries met.
“Being nominated to be part of the 2019 Texas Sound Country Music Awards is really an honour. The three-day international event is really big, as it will open doors for my music career and it will also put Eswatini on the map.

“I am ecstatic as I love country music and such an opportunity has shown that my music is growing. It is such a blessing to be the first female country music singer from Eswatini to be part of such an event,” she said.
Dusty and Stones, Eswatini’s duo who were part of the event last year, also expressed their excitement.
“Methula’s involvement in the awards proves that Eswatini has rich talent, be it any genre. Our experience was great and we hope she experiences the same fulfilment,” said the duo.

Swaziland Arts and Music Association (SWAMA) President Melusi ‘Zox’ Dlamini said they were delighted in learning such news.

Impressed

“We are excited for her and the industry at large. She has something special to offer and this just shows the magnitude of the talent we have in Eswatini. She has done nothing but work all these years and now she is simply reaping the rewards.

“We are also impressed with the unity shown by country music artists in the kingdom and we wish her all the best. We are confident she will bring it home. She has a big song currently, which is on high rotation on local radio, so this didn’t come as a surprise at all,” said Dlamini.

This event brings participants from around the world and audience members from across the nation to Jefferson. Income from this influx of people is an integral part of the economy that keeps Jefferson alive. Jefferson is the only surviving city in one of the poorest counties in Texas, a small town of only 1 800 residents, that depends largely upon tourism as its primary industry. The worldwide publicity that this event generates is a major boost to the future of tourism in Jefferson.
International musicians flock to Jefferson with the hope of winning a Texas Sounds award.
