MBABANE - Bigger and better! While SWAMA announced the extension of the MTN SWAMA Awards voting deadline, votes have improved by over 25 per cent since the last update was released over a week ago.

The Swaziland Music Association (SWAMA) PRO Thabile Mdluli confirmed that as at September 25, a total of 13 237 votes had been amassed, from 9 907 previously. This is an increase of over 3 000 votes.

The Song of the Year category has shown massive improvement, from 161 votes in the previous tally to 889, an increase of approximately 82 per cent.
“This is the only category that is wholly-reliant on public votes. Also showing some improvement was the Best Newcomer, Best Collaboration and Best Jazz Artist or Group categories, while Best Artist in the Diaspora, Best Afro-Pop, Best Video, Best Male and Best Female Artist categories remain at the bottom with little or no improvement,” she added.

Dusty Simelane of Dusty and Stones, the country music duet, said seeing their song being nominated for song of the year was humbling.
“Nothing compares to getting recognition right here at home. It is encouraging to know there are people out there who love and appreciate what we do,” simelane said.

Working

He added they would keep on working hard, while extending appreciation to the organisers of the event. Moreover, hardworking rap artist Illa Penboy said he was hoping for the best.
“I encourage people to continue voting for their favourites. I did not do much this year; I think others deserve the award better than me. So I will vote for others instead,” he said.
The second Annual MTN SWAMA Awards is expected to take place at the Royal Swazi Sun Convention Centre on December 1.
“SWAMA would like to encourage fans to continue voting for their favourite artists by SMSing the Category and Name of the Artist (e.g. Artist of the Year, Dynamic Trio) to 6161. Each vote costs E1,” Mdluli encouraged the public.
