SIPHOFANENI – Just as he was about to enter the main door of his church, ready for his Thursday service, he was stopped dead in his tracks by the scary sight of a live puff-adder snake (Libululu).

Mduduzi ‘Gawuzela’ Simelane is lucky to be alive after escaping from almost being attacked by a puff –adder snake, which was estimated to be about 1.5 metres long.

The snake was at the church’s entrance door which is strictly used by Gawuzela when entering his church.
The charismatic pastor had to shout for help from some members of the church who responded swiftly and killed the poisonous snake.
The day marked the start of his three day prayer and worship services.

Narrating the ordeal Gawuzela said, “I was just about to enter the church as the services had already started inside. As always I used my personal door, which I must mention is only used by myself to enter and exit the church. I noticed the snake right in front of me,” he said.

He added, “Accompanying me was my entourage that had escourted me from the car. Just when I was about to get to the door I saw the snake and told one of the people I was with. I was not far away from it.”
He said the church elders advised him not to use the door as they wanted to kill it.

“They asked me to continue with the service while they make an attempt of killing it. They managed to kill it,” he said.
He added that he was shaken a bit by the incident, as he was preparing to preach.

“I was preaching on that day and by then the praise and worship session had started. I just thank God for showing me the snake otherwise I must say I was in danger,” he said.
Gawuzela explained what shocked him most was that the snake was stationed just at the door.

“Had I not seen it, we would be talking a different story. Thanks to the leadership of the church who attended to the snake while I made sure that the service continued as planned.”
A church member who happened to have also witnessed the episode said they were still shocked as the way the snake reacted scared them.
“One could tell that if somebody was bitten, no one would have come out alive,” narrated the witness.

Thea Litchka, one of the local snake catching experts said Simelane was lucky to notice the snake early. “The Puff-adder is dangerous. It is one snake that is common and it is one of the snakes that has the fastest bites,” she said.
She added, “If not treated quickly, the bite could cause death. Had he not seen it in time, it could have caused serious harm,” she said.
She encourage people not to kill snakes saying when one attempts to kill a snake he is increasing the chance of danger to 80 per cent.
“If provoked, snakes can be very dangerous and therefore we need to make sure we avoid this,” she said.

Gawuzela is the leader and founder of God’s Grace Miracle Point International Church, and leader of the famed gospel group Mduduzi Nezinceku Zamagawugawu. He is also well known for his annual crossover shows that always draw thousands every year on December 31.
