MANZINI – Pain and sorrow have engulfed the choral music industry.

Seasoned choral adjudicator, song writer and composer Sikelela Msibi is without a leg. Msibi, who is well known for his adjudicating skills especially in the Old Mutual Choral Music Festival, which is one of the biggest choral music competitions in the Southern African region, had one of his legs cut by doctors following a sickness that had to do with sugar diabetes. The conductor, who is also known for being one of the top conductors for the country’s oldest choir, Manzini Choir, has spent some time undergoing treatment at the Good Shepherd Hospital in Siteki. At the time when the incident occurred, Msibi had formed his own choir known as Symphony Singers, which was expected to stage its first performance during the Standard Bank Choral Music Championship.

Most choristers, conductors and music lovers are now aware of Msibi’s situation, as he could not attend the recently held Standard Bank Choral Music Championship because of his condition. Last Friday, those who attended the Eswatini’s Biggest Braai launch got to know about Msibi’s situation. Lutfo Dlamini, Philani Maswati Charity Organisation Chairperson, said he paid Msibi a visit after being informed about his situation. Dlamini mentioned that Msibi, whom he described as someone who had done so much for the country in as far as music is concerned, still loved choral music despite the fact that he was without a leg. “It is a touching situation but what I am happy about is the fact that he has seen God’s mercy. He has mentioned that God has given him a second chance and he wants to make history in the music,” he said. Dlamini urged choral music loves to support Msibi, saying this is the time when he needs more support from the nation. The Swaziland National Choral Music Association (SNCMA) asked not to comment, saying they were yet to meet Msibi. The association said after meeting Msibi, they would then issue a statement on the issue.
