MATSAPHA – It was supposed to be the crowning of the fairest female and male students attending the University of Swaziland, but unforeseen circumstances saw the annual event cancelled.

The much awaited Mr and Miss UNISWA Beauty Pageant 2018 was cancelled at the last minute. It had been planned for last Friday at the UNISWA Kwaluseni Campus Multipurpose Hall. The university students were all aware of the pageant and were excited as the day drew nearer.  According to some of the students preparations of the university’s last pageant were at an advanced stage, as contestants were seen practising all week long.  However, on the day of the finale, everyone was turned away at the gate. The security personnel at the UNISWA campus gate, simply told those who had come in numbers to witness the crowning, that the event was cancelled. No clear reasons were stated except that the students were informed that the pageant would no longer continue on the expected night ,but will take place this Wednesday, April 18  2018.

While some students got to know about the pageant cancellation late on Friday afternoon, others only heard the information as they went to the MPH with the hope of witnessing the event.

Complaining

Just after 8pm, fun lovers especially those who are not students were heard complaining that they drove all the way to the campus for the pageant. The security officers calmed the situation and said they had not been told the reason for the cancellation but were simply instructed to inform all those who had come to support the students that the pageant had been cancelled.  “The security officers do not have much information except to tell us that the event was not going to be held tonight,” said Sihle Khumalo one of the fun lovers found at the gate. She said she had come all the way from Mbabane to support the students.  “No reasons were stated to us. Ours was just to tell everyone who will attend that the event had been cancelled and they should come on Wednesday at 7pm as that is when it is expected to take place,” said one of the security officers who preffered to remain anonymous. The Student Representative Committee (SRC) could not be reached for comment as all their phones were off.
