MANZINI – It was an all night affair that seemed to fuse beauty pageantry and clubbing. It has become the norm that if you want to witness the crowning of the freshest student at UNISWA, be prepared to wait until the next morning.

Luyengo Campus’ freshest queen and king were crowned just after 3am last Friday night. This was after hours of waiting, as the pageant had been scheduled to start at 8pm. The pageant was held at the fully packed White House last Friday.
Agriculture and Economics student Nkosinathi Sibandze and Consumer Science student Siphosethu Malinga, were crowned as the University of Swaziland Luyengo Campus’ freshest of them all.

Sibandze and Malinga won the hearts of the judges who spent over an hour trying to come up with the overall winners. The Mr Fresher’s saw 12 male students competing for the title, while only seven competed for the Miss Fresher’s title.
Competition from both the males and females was tight as all the students who participated were confident on stage. The Mr/Miss Fresher’s pageant does not require students to answer any questions. With only first year students required to enter, they simply parade in casual and formal wear. They are judged on confidence in walking, interacting with the crowd and introducing themselves flawlessly.

Despite the fact that it started late, the audience was keen to see the winners of the night, screaming out the name of their favourite contestant. The contestants first walked on the ramp in groups, dressed in their casual wear and later coming in individually in their formal wear.

As they walked on the stage, the judges would score points for each and everyone so they could be in a position of coming up with the winner.

It was just not an easy task for the judges to pick the final winner. They would take a decision and revisit again. This happened three times before announcing the night’s freshest of them all.
When it was time for the judges to announce the winners, they preferred not to announce the top five but only call the winners.

When Sibandze and Malinga were announced as the night’s winners, the audience roared in applause of approval.
This is because the two were the favourites of the night and displayed confidence on stage.
