MALKERNS – He has not performed in the country for quite some time and his hordes of fans could not wait to watch him.

However, South African jazz icon Hugh Masekela did not live up to the expectations which disappointed some of his fans.
This is because the artist, who is regarded as one of the best trumpeters in the world, rendered a lukewarm performance on the last day of the MTN Bushfire Festival on Sunday where he was among the main acts.

When he kicked off his performance with his song titled ‘Chileshe’ he called out to his fans saying, “You’ve got the bush, now make the fire,” but he did not have the energy that was shown by most of the foreign artists who had performed before him.
Some of his fans who were inside the Golden Circle commented that perhaps he had challenges with the sound while others joked that the icon had run his mile and no longer had the energy that they expected.

However, credit should be given to his band especially the lead guitarist whose energy and quality sound made up for the not so wow performance. Despite that he was not at his element best, his fans screamed and danced to most of his songs which included ‘Thanayi’, ‘Mamu’yajabula’ and ‘Stimela’.
