MBABANE – The SwaziBank School Choral Music Festival has started.

The festival which has been sponsored by the bank began on a high note with an instrument player’s workshop.
The workshop was attended by at least 35 instrument players who will be competing during the festival, was held on Saturday at the Christian University at Mahhwalala.

The Swaziland National Schools Choral Music Association (SNSCMA) decided to add an instrument competition. The instrument competition is the  first of its kind ever since the festival was launched over 12 years ago.

The instrument competition is not open to pupils alone as adults who believe they have the talent to  play instruments have also been given an opportunity of showing their talent.

The country’s aspiring musicians were divided into groups with others concentrating on pianos while others were being taught how to play wind instruments, such as trumpets .

Others were taught how to play acoustic instruments which are normally used by those who play orchestra. Facilitating during the workshop were local and international music specialists who made sure that those who would be competiting during the finals got to understand what the judges would be looking for.

The facilitators of the day were local pianists Musa Dlamini, Hee Jung Kim from the Christian University and Atosa Khalili, a music teacher from South Africa who specialises on wind instruments.
Those who attended the workshop spent the day being taught how to play the instruments.

Khonelinkhosi Dlamini, SNCMA Chairperson, said they were pleased with the number of people who attended the workshops. It was a workshop which was in preparations of the finals.

“The finals are set for June 25, 2017, where all the instrument players will be given a chance of proving their worth on the stage,” he said.  Dlamini said since the competition had started, parents were encouraged to support their children.

“This year will be one of the greatest competitions as there are new ideas that are being implemented, like the instrument player’s competition. There are still more to come,” he added.
