MBABANE – While local Mbaqanga musicians have not been receiving the recognition they deserve, this will now be history as they have been given an opportunity of promoting their music in South Africa’s leading TV station, SABC 1.

The TV station has since invited local traditional music singers to submit their music so they could be selected and be screened in the station’s leading traditional programme known as The Roots.
The station is not only looking for mbaqanga musicians but is also looking for choral and opera singers who will be featured on another SABC 1 programme known as ‘Imizwilili’

Responsible for the production of the two programmes on behalf of the SABC is a company known as Ukhamba Communications.
Artists who believe in themselves can start submitting their material so they can be scheduled for a shoot. The first shoot for this year’s episodes is scheduled for February 23.

Ukhamba Communications normally does the shoots once a month.
The Mbaqanga and Maskandi musicians have been asked to submit their CDs so that the producers can  have a listening session  and make a selection.

For those who want to be part of Imizwilili, they will be given songs of well-known artists which they will be expected to rearrange and submit the recording. The producers will then take a decision if that choir is good enough to be featured on the programme.

Abram Mija, Ukhamba Communications producer confirmed that they were looking for local traditional and opera musicians who would be featured on their programmes.

“Swazis are talented and it is the talent we have seen that made us take a decision of scouting  artists who will be featured on our programmes.
Other artists we are looking for are those who sing traditional music,” he said.
He said for those who want to be featured on Imizwilili, they would have to rearrange songs which would be given to them.

“We already have a few songs that are circulating and these include songs from artists such as Hhashelimhlophe, Boomshaka and Bambanani. These are some of the artists’ songs that will be given to the artists to rearrange,” he said.

Mija said they decided to scout for Swazi talent when they recorded Mduduzi Nezinceku Zamagawugawu’s mbaqanga song titled ‘MaKrestu Masithandane’, which features South Africa top maskandi singer Phuzekhemisi.

He said those who are interested in bringing their material can send it to: Umkhamba Communications, P.O. Box 177 Pinegowrie 2123.
For those who want to be part of Imizwilili, they can send an email to: boobbygreasehands@gmailcom.
